Women Top Bravehearts in Gritty Road Win

By Scott Lemon, Yellowstone Christian SID

KYLE, S.D. — It wasn’t pretty, but the Yellowstone Christian College Centurions picked up their seventh straight victory on Saturday afternoon, topping the Oglala Lakota College Bravehearts 69-59 in Kyle, S.D., and completing the season sweep.

After the Centurions won by 21 on Friday night, the Bravehearts came out armed for revenge on Saturday. The Centurions didn’t help their cause any, committing 19 turnovers. However, YCC made their free throws count, connecting on 10-of-16 attempts from the charity stripe.

Paige Gregory and Zhane Akeya both put up new career-best performances in scoring to lead the offense for the Centurions. Gregory poured in 22 points on 10-of-19 shooting, pulled down a game-high eight boards, and blocked a shot. Akeya scored 18 points, picked up five rebounds, and dished out four assists. Tiani Alvarez led all players in assists, dropping seven dimes, and Akeya and Sharnell Thomas each had four steals to co-lead all athletes in that category.

Cammi Bear Killer has scored in double-figures in every matchup against the Centurions this season, and continued that trend on Saturday, dropping 17 points and grabbing three boards. Kayla Bravo, Erika Kootswatewa, and Santanna Young Man joined Bear Killer in double-digits with 13, 11, and 10 points respectively. As a team, the Bravehearts connected on exactly 50% (8-of-16) of their shots from three-point land.

The Centurions still have five games left on their season schedule, with their next matchup coming on the road on Friday night against Fort Peck Community College in Poplar. For more information on the season and for full game recaps, visit www.gocenturions.com.
